Mackenzie Jardine (BHS) is a Research Assistant at Morning Star Lodge. Mackenzie is a Métis woman raised in Regina, SK. She has completed a Bachelor of Health Studies and is currently in medical school (Class of 2023) at the University of Saskatchewan. With the mentorship provided at MSL, she hopes to contribute to eliminating the health inequities experienced by Indigenous Peoples.

"Digging Deep: Barriers to HIV Care Among Indigenous Women"

 

Morning Star Lodge is an Indigenous community-based health research lab committed to research and education that will influence Indigenous Peoples in Canada’s lives in a positive way. We are a team of dedicated individuals committed to research and education to influence the health of Indigenous Peoples. We aim to build capacity by training, teaching, and hiring locally and to promote Indigenous research methodologies by practicing community-based research. Our research projects are co-collaborative. In the lab we work as a team on variety of health research projects. We aim to promote supportive environments by creating healthy reciprocal and respectful relationships with Indigenous communities.

"Atikamekw Nehirowisiw Mirowatisiwin: Identifying the Strengths of Manawan" / "Identifier les forces de Manawan"

 

The three speakers are presenting on behalf of the Community Mobilization Training (CMT) project, from the Kahnawà:ke Schools Diabetes Prevention Program.

 

Sonia P.-A. was born and has roots in France, but has now been growing roots in Québec for over 14 years. At the time of the project, Sonia was completing a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition under the supervision of Pr. Treena Delormier. Her thesis work was part of the CMT Research Project and explored perspectives of wellness in the Nehirowisow Atikamekw community of Manawan, Quebec. She is now working for the CMT project as a research assistant. Guylaine O. and Debby F. are Atikamekw Nehirowisiw from Manawan and participated in the CMT in their community. At the time of the project, they were working as community intervention workers at the Mihawoso Social Pediatrics Center. Guylaine O. worked as a community research assistant for the CMT project. She is now completing a technique in Specialized Education. Her mission is to help and support youth from Manawan so they can thrive. She wants to share with them the necessary knowledge on healthy lifestyles. Debby is a Sacred Fire keeper and a knowledge keeper. She shares her knowledge orally. She loves nature and the forest is part of her identity.

 

Les trois conférencières présenteront au nom du projet de Formation à la mobilisation communautaire (FMC) coordonné par le Programme de prévention du diabète pour les écoles de Kahnawà:ke.

Sonia P.-A. est née et a des racines en France, mais fait désormais pousser ses racines au Québec depuis plus de 14 ans. Au moment du projet, Sonia terminait une maîtrise en nutrition humaine sous la supervision de la Pre Treena Delormier. Son projet de maîtrise faisait partie du projet de recherche FMC et explorait les perspectives de mieux-être dans la communauté Nehirowisow Atikamekw de Manawan, au Québec. Elle travaille maintenant pour le projet FMC en tant qu’assistante de recherche. Guylaine O. et Debby F. sont Atikamekw Nehirowisiw de Manawan et ont participé à la FMC dans leur communauté. Au moment du projet, elles travaillaient comme intervenantes communautaires au Centre de pédiatrie sociale Mihawoso. Guylaine O. a travaillé comme assistante de recherche communautaire pour le projet FMC. Elle termine maintenant une technique en éducation spécialisée. Sa mission est d’aider, de soutenir et d’accompagner les jeunes de Manawan afin qu’ils puissent s’épanouir. Elle veut leur transmettre les connaissances nécessaires sur les saines habitudes de vie. Debby est gardienne du feu sacré et gardienne de la culture. Elle transmet ses savoirs et connaissances oralement. Elle adore la nature, et la forêt fait partie de son identité.

"Strengthening Community through a

Traditional Haudenosaunee Diet:

A Compilation of Digital Stories"

 

We are presenting on behalf of the Healthy Roots Research Study Team. Kelly Gordon, RD, is the dietitian who helped conceive and design the Healthy Roots Challenge and Research Study. Russell de Souza is a dietitian and associate professor at McMaster University, who specializes in nutrition epidemiology. Nicole Bilodeau is a freelance writer who works with Six Nations Health Services. Darlene Davis is Wolf Clan and is a research nurse who has been collaborating with McMaster’s research group for over 20 years. She coordinated clinic visits and data collection. Lori Davis Hill, MHSc is the Director of Six Nations Health Services. Co-author of the paper and participated in the community challenge. She championed and provided administrative and financial support for the project. Dr. Sujane Kandasamy is a qualitative researcher who led the interviews and created the video story. Bhavna Samtani is a videographer who collaborated with Dr. Kandasamy to produce the video. Dr. Sonia Anand is the principal investigator of the Canadian Alliance of Healthy Hearts and Minds, which provided infrastructure support for this project.  She helped facilitate this research connection, by virtue of her strong history of working with Six Nations of the Grand River.
