Statement on the Unmarked Graves at Kamloops Indian Residential School

The Turtle Island Journal of Indigenous Health (TIJIH) offers our heartfelt condolences to our families and relatives in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and Kamloops, British Columbia. We also acknowledge our relatives who continue to practice survivance following their generational experiences with the residential schools system across Turtle Island. The announcement on May 27, 2021 about the unmarked graves at Kamloops Indian Residential School has brought conversations about the impacts of residential schools and the continuous presence of colonization to the forefront of Canadian and global consciousness. At TIJIH, our hearts are heavy as we take this in.
